This book is a brilliant collection of women writers sharing a chapter of their memoir. All of the stories make the reader want more from each writer. I look forward to each author finishing the books these chapters come from.
A Beautiful Tapestry
This exciting book is a collection of touching memoirs by a diverse group of writers which includes teachers, nurses, business professionals, a cleric, and a computer programmer. All are well-written, in language that shines, with a refreshing clarity and boldness that evoke a range of emotions.
One of the writers, Rochelle Stassa, describing the impact of a revelation, writes, “My loss of innocence was palpable. I clung to my mother and as she held me close, her arms tightened around me. She kissed my face. My tears began to fall. They have yet to ceaseâ€(p43) .
Even though each is written from a particular geographic and cultural space, they transcend these individual spaces and share familiar universal human experiences.
Nevertheless,these stories are told in different styles; for example, in the warm story ‘Christmas Was Different’, by Audrey Sharp, was written in the form of a diary, whereas, ‘Where Am I From’ by Rosalind Delores Ellerbee was written in the form of a poem.
The book is divided into five themes; Learning From the Past, Family Traditions, Celebrations, Love and Loss, Hope and Survival, and Social Justice.
Learning that these memoirs are chapters from larger works is exciting and anyone who has read these excerpts will eagerly look forward to the complete works.
